Coral stone sculpture with Sanskrit inscription

Coral stone block carved on one side in the form of an apotropaic demon head (kala). On the reverse is an inscription in Sanskrit comprised of texts from Vajrayana Buddhist mantras. The object thus dates from the period before the conversion of the king of the Maldives to Islam in 1153. It was discovered on the island of Gan in Laamu atoll in an area near the ruins of a Buddhist religious site at Kuruhinna. The object has been damaged with scrapes to forehead and the bridge of the nose.
